In starting this project, it was very important to me to create a space where the accessibly disabled can maneuver without the help of an assistance. A place where they can be free and feel like they can do whatever they want without any limitations.
This spa is a place to go to release your body, mind and soul. There are three different environments: a steam cove that is separated by a cool wall of falling water, an indoor-gradual decline into the pool, and the outdoor pool which includes a central calm water area and surrounding flowing water.
The bathing space is designed for the user to easily release themselves from their wheel chair and steadily float through the pool. This will free them from the feeling of confinement and need of someone else to help them.
The surrounding area of this space is the Greek isles. This is because there is beautiful scenery from the high cliffs, and there is a strong connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, which is what I wanted for this spa as well.
Materials were incorporated by imitation into the design that is found in Greek architecture, such as Gypsum and other hard materials. Greek design uses a lot of shades of blue to imitate the color of the Mediterranean Sea.

It is absolutely amazing to me how much technology has developed in the past few decades. It says a lot that a computer took up 1,000 sq. ft. and today it can be held in the palm of your hand. Something that I did not know was that the advance in computer-aided design was made possible by innovative Universities that took the initiative to build and grow. You might think that because of this, the technology might be used in schools first instead of architectural firms. This makes me think that we, as interior architectural students can really do something to help the community such as our bus shelter last semester, and possibly the design community as a whole.

The amenities that technology provides by creating images to reflect our ideas and designs are enormous. At this day in age, the sky is the limit in design because we have endless opportunities in that we have computers to do the math for us. As a new comer to this technology, I am a little overwhelmed with all of the things these software such as CAD can do. Looking back, in the development process of these programs, I wonder why architectural firms took the time to use these programs when it seemed like it would have taken just as much or less time for them to hand-draft the images. The computers were very slow at that time and the drawings looked fairly simple.

Computer generated images produce high quality renderings that exemplify your design very well. However, I do not believe that these technologies should be used in the design process. Technology, to me, takes away creative thinking and doesn’t let the mind release innovative ideas. First, ideas must be sketched and drawn out over many iterations and the final product should be transferred into a form of technology.

At first, we were very overwhelmed because there are many different codes for certain things. We had a hard time understanding that proxemics and ergonomics were not codes, but they are standards of comfort. It is a little scary not knowing if we are abiding by the codes correctly. Once we looked into codes, proximics and ergonomics, our design changed in order to make our bus handicap accessible.

We would recommend that designers keep in mind that every public space needs to be accessible to handicap people. Everyone needs to be able to get to every corner of a space and reach needed heights. This past couple weeks, we have really learned that our design for a space is not supposed to be just pleasing to the eye, but should really serve as something for people who are using it to interact with.

Codes help in design because they give a basis, or a general idea of the minimum amount of space needed to walk around etc. for your design. However, they also pose as a limitation because the design may change after the realization that people with lesser ability are unable to utilize the space.

Codes will change our work as a designer because the design must conform to different standards and regulations. It will be nice once we know some of the codes and standards by memory, so that we, as designers, can keep this information retained in our mind while designing the first model.

VALUES + HOPES:
One of the concerns in our analysis was to make sure there was visibility of the surrounding area so that you can see if the bus is coming while you are sitting in the shelter.

NATURAL LIGHT + ARTIFICIAL LIGHT:

We wanted to make sure that there was natural light, as well as light from either nearby light post or instaled light into the structure.

CIRCULATION + USE:

There is little seating for bus passengers in the shelter we observed. Even though there is room for four people on one seat, only two people tend to occupy one bench because of its awkardness. we also want to consider making a space for people who are handicap and need a wheel chair.

REPETITIVE + UNIQUE:

As noticed by many other groups, it was very hot in the park and ride shelter. We want to o create ceiling that does not obsorb heat, as well as make an open space that has good ventilation.

TECTONIC + MECHANIC:

Another topic we want to adress is how the shelter contacts the ground. This shelter has legs that are bolted onto the ground.

3rd times a Charm

This experience has been quite an eventful one, mainly because I had the most difficulty getting onto the bus. My original plan was to board on Tate st in front of Jimmy Johns. I walked down to the bus stop with Ashleigh, Brianna and Chelsea. We got there early so we thought we had time to quickly use the restroom. I ended up being the last in line for the bathroom, and was surprised to find no one when I came out of the restaurant. Then, my phone rang, it was Ashleigh saying that they tried to get the bus driver to wait for me but he ignored their request.
I knew the next bus came in approximately thirty minutes, but I was a little skeptical about riding on the bus by myself.
I waited until after class and finished working on my chair cards. Brianna was nice enough to offer to ride with me on the bus again. Again, we headed towards Jimmy Johns. As we were walking on Spring Garden, we saw the GTA bus driving away. They were fifteen minutes early and they were already gone!!! I was so frustrated, and was considering not doing the assignment because it it seemed like it was not meant to be. However, Brianna was persistent with we stick with it and wait another thirty minutes for the bus to come back to the other stop on Tate st.
We waited and waited and waited a little more for the bus to return. Finally, it arrived and the doors opened. I took a step onto the first step and the door closed on me. I was stuck and Brianna was still out of the bus! I squirm my way into the bus, turn around and see Brianna freaking out and not knowing what to do. Meanwhile, everyone else on the bus is hysterically laughing. I pry the bus door open and get Brianna on board. The bus is packed and there are only two open seats in the back. Everyone is starring at us because of what had just happened. We started talking about our experience so far with GTA, and two girls sitting across from us started relating to out story. These two girls were very nice and made us not feel like we were the only ones having a difficult time with public transit. The bus driver swung us around as if we were in a roller coaster. He took all of the back roads to the mall and the longest way to turn around from the mall. When we arrived at the mall, everyone but us got out. The bus driver took this opportunity to yell at us for boarding on the back of the bus. We told him that we were sorry and we didn't know you were supposed to board on the front entrance.
Finally, we arrived back on Tate st. and thanked God that this experience was over.

This site is a furniture design site. It is very simple in its design and carries through the entire site with natural colors. This is good for this particular site because a lot of the product from the designer is made out of wood. It is also nice that when you click to see what products they have, there are thumbnails of all the products hat scrolls as you move your pointer. The background is of a room in a beige color and with black shadows, which is carried through the site in black font. Also keeping with the natural look, the other color of font used is green.

This is one of my favorite design websites because it is very simplistic. There is no color to it other than the line of pictures of his furniture. It is a very clean slate design. This is a very nice website, except for couple nit picky problems i have with it. I really dont like how they didn't choose a more efficient design font and decided to stick with Times New Roman. For some reason, i think times new roman font looks unprofessional and very homemade. It does a very good job at displaying its work and answering a lot of questions the customer might have.

This site is also very clean cut and displays its work very well. as soon as you locate the site, you can immediately determine the products it offers and style it which the designer goes by.
But, i am going to be picky with this site again and complain about the use of font. On this site, it also uses times new roman, along with a couple different types, which is distracting to the eye. The designer should have chosen to use only one type of font.

New Technologies

CeeLite's innovative LEC Techonology is finding new ways to produce lighting. It provides a flawless surface illumination and unbelivable versatility, it ispaper thin, flat, and its flexible light bulb can be applied virtually anywhere such as on floors and walls, around columns on vehicles and even clothes.

This piece of technology was first showcased at SIGGRAPH 2006. It is flooring that you can step on and it is as though you are walking on water. It comes to life, this can be used in hospitals for therapy and rehabilitation.

Graphic Media

As we all know, puppy dog eyes make a person sympathetic and will give into anything. I found this example of graphic media neat because they didn't take a picture of a dog and adjust its eyes to look really cute, but they graphically designed the entire puppy.

This ad caught my eye because of the melon on the mans head, obviously. I wonder how it is that they can create something to look so real. It is also sort of gross because you can see the watermelon sliced open, which would be his brain.

Obviously, this is an ipod commercial. They have this look of a solid color in the background and a black contour branded. This was a very smart decision because the ipod is the only detailed object in the entire ad.

The orange sunlight in this ad is so riveting and draws the viewer to the center of the page to get to know what the purpose of the commercial is. Although i am uncertain as to what this ad is for other than using your imagination, the buildings looks so real, but almost taken from a comic book because of the pixels you can see.

A lot of car commercials look like this, they have the car turned at a particular angle in the center of the ad, there is little color in order to show off the car, and there is one catchy line.

I really enjoy this piece of graphic media because it is trying to get the viewer to understand the experience of going sailing on a particular boat. It shows people working, the water flowing and certain features to the boat itself.

This ad is so simple that it gives you the only information you need. I like the black background that lines each picture with a white background. The only information they give you is what their type of design is and where you can get in contact with someone to learn more about it.

It is a really nice touch that this advertisment uses the dots in the bag to their advantage. the black and white is very simple, but classic and the poka dots give it a connection between the entire ad and the bag.

The reason as to why i chose this ad is because of the choice that they decided to divide the products into squares. However, there are a few product that break the square boundaries and they stand out more.

This advertisment is very clever to me because the product, carpet, is divided into modules(hence the name) and the ad is broken up into the same shaped squares, almost as though you are mapping out where to put each square foot of carpet.

Anna McCorvey's radius top design shows that you dont have to have the typical doorway. I like her work because it is a work of art and not only serves a perpose and is functional, but it the building that it is placed in a new character that it did not have before.

Olafur Elliassons Serpentine Gallery Pavilion is made out of clad in timber, it has a spinning top. A wide spiralling ramp makes two complete turns, allowing visitors to go up from the Gallery lawn to the highest point for views across Kensington Gardens as well as a bird’s eye view of the chamber below. This, along with many other of his designs is about the personal experience the viewer has rather than just the dimention of the work.

Frank Lloyd Wrights Massaro House on Petra Island was built fifty years after the designers death. he designed this house on an island and it juts out into the ocean. He uses the natural rocks and enviornment to his advantage in this design as well as many other of his homes. A common theme is using the house to be able to see nature in a different way and bring it into the home. I admire his buildings because it defines the design of not changing nature to create a masterpiece, but by working the building into nature creates a whole new field of beauty.
Zaha Hadid redefines traditional fundamentals or architecture. Her work is very sculptural. I admire her work because she doesnt try to fit into context, she likes to take her work out of context and make it aesthenically pleasing. You can look at one building and see different things in it, for example in this building the side image looks like a bird, but from uptop it looks like a tulip. she has designed many other buildings such as the Glasgow Museum, the Contemperary Arts Center in Rome and The Vitra Fire Station in Germany. Her buildings heavily deal with form, abstraction, line, light, function and texture.

Shin Takamatsu is not a designer, but a Japenese architect that i wanted to bring to light. This building is the new Japanese Theatre. He has many varieties in his works, but defines each piece with solid lines. This piece is very traditional with a spin, which i enjoy a lot. the design seems simple in that the lines are crossing each other, but the dimension in which is curves is genius.
Patricia Urquiola's work is very dimensional, what i have noticed in this research is the use of geometry and colors and how they effect each other. Patricia Urquiola's work is the perfect representation because of the different colors that she uses to make her furniture pieces stand out, also the geometry and shapes that are bent to provide a snug shape to the body

Matthew Hilton's furniture designs are very sleek in their look. He has good use of lines and balancing with color and materials. If i were to go into furniture design, i think my designs would represent his shapes and lines that he uses. My favorite aspect to the majority of his pieces is the shapes that he uses, mainly he uses squares and rectangles which makes it simple and modern.

James Krenov is a world re noun woodworker. His work caught my eye because he has excellent craftsmanship and incorporates several types of wood in every piece he makes. He knows how to make furniture have a bulky side to it but also gives it an elegant, sleek look that is a classical design, yet modern.

I have to say, after all of this research i think i have found my favorite building designer, Frank O. Gehry. I didnt know that he was the one who designed the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Now that i have looks at other works of his i am in awe. He does an excellent job of making it so that straight and curved lines work in perfect harmony. This is exactly the kind of work i would like someday to be able to do myself.

Charlotte Perriand was a great furninture designer in the 1920's-40's. She developed "Bar Under the Roof" — furniture made out of chromed steel and anodized aluminum. however, this was one of many of her developments. This particular piece is that of one of the phases she went through as a designer. This phase consisted of square and rectangular forms that made up a shelf. In a lot of her designs she has the same sort of shelving, but in addition she has a horizontal piece of wood to serve as a bench. I enjoy her work because of its geometry and her choices in color, she didn't use a whole lot of color but when she did it pops.

Im sure a lot of other students have done research on Domus magazine, but i felt that since Tommy talks about it so much that i should know about it. I am trying to get better at learning different types of design and where it comes from. From going to Europe this summer, i understand how architectural forms develop because of what resources are available to use for building. Italian design seems to be very sleek and modern, as well as simplistic and high in craft. When i think of italian design i think of quality and precision.

The English Home magazine is one of my favorite magazines in the resource library to look at page layouts because they have a common white background that separates pictures and it is very simple. This magazine is based around English design and interior spaces. This style is very interesting to me and i would like to learn more about it because it seems very cottagy and elegant with a lot of roses. There is a lot of the outdoors brought into homes. English design doesn't seem to be very modern and innovative, but more so traditional.

Second Look Wallpaper is an environmentally friendly material thatcontains at least 20% recycled content with a minimum of 10% post-consumer materials.
The green screen is a great idea because it provides shade for the building and it provides more greenery which is great for preventing air pollution. this screen is not only good for the environment in these ways, but it also lowers the amount of energy needed to keep the building cool during the summer and hot in the winter because it provides shade and insulation.

Encycle backing is PVC free, closed loop recyclable and uses 1/3 less raw materials.

FlexStone contains a flexible rubber material at the bottom under the stone or carpeting, there is a recycled rubber base that is good for draining and paving systems.

Aegis metal framing serves to preserve the environment, protect the future and inspire design. Their products are made from 100% recycled material, and is non- combustible.

Acousticork products are environmentally sustainable because they are made from renewing bark of cork oak trees. None of these trees are ever cut down to produce the product.

Ecoresin is a translucent, co-polymer sheet material that contains a significant amount of recycled content. ecoresin is non-toxic, durable, chemically resistant, and made up of 40% re-grind content.

A heat pump is a machine or that moves heat from one location to another location using work. Most heat pumps move heat from a low temperature heat source to a higher temperature heat sink.Common examples are refrigerators and freezers, air conditioners and reversible thermal heat, and water chillers.

A green roof is the best thing you can do on the top of a building to improve the environment. It has no impact on the building because there is a waterproof membrane that is between the soil, water and growth and the actual roof. The green roof can retain 75% of water from rainfall and slowly release it back into the atmosphere. A roof that is green is typicaly 25- 80 degrees cooler than that of a non green roof.

The Solar Cell is made from a monocrystalline silicon wafer. it is used to create energy by using sunlight. This saves resources such as coal and oil that are non renewable.

Interior Environments

This interior really stood out to me because of the color choice, the orange pops. Also, the fabrics are all different in their texture. It is simplistic design because there is only orange and black, but there is also a lot going on because of the different textures.

The designer of this apartment did a great job at knowing what to do when there is little space. The backing of the couch is almost used as a wall to disconnect the kitchen and the TV room. It is very classic that the color pallet is black and white with only one red pillow.

I guess I am drawn to black and white because it seems as though i chose a lot of rooms that's color pallet is black and white with a hint of one color. In this case, i love that the focus is through the window and the accent color is green, which leads the eye to the window.

I want this bathroom so extremely bad! Green is my favorite color and the tile did it for me. I also love hints of metal and white, such as the sinks and faucets.

I thought this was interesting because everything is plain and white. I wonder if this is a model, and if so then i would love to make models like this when i design rooms in the next few years. it is clean and just gives the feel of what the room is supposed to be like.

This is that kind of room i wish my house looked like. It is comfy, i feel like i can just dive into the couch. I love the neutral colors and hint of black in the lamp and picture frames.

This room is in dubai and has an interesting combination of colors. it looks like the color pallet was inspired by the carpet. My favorite aspect of this room is that there are windows all the way around to show the best quality of the room: the view.

I like how this one brings in two completely different colors, and it works. I think the insiration of the color pallet was the tropical flower on the left. Color combinations are always the prettiest when nature picks them to be together, it somehow looks natural.

My favorite aspect to this room is the choice in flooring. It looks as though it is one beam of wood stained and one beam of wood painted white. In this case, contemporary and traditional go very well together. The color choice is very bland, but it has a rich blue and robin egg.

This design reminds me of being in Germany this summer. I do not know a whole lot about design, but i get a modern, German design feel when i look at this. Mainly because everything is stored one one wall in a straight line. Germans are very minimal and straight forward.

This is the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. It is made out of aluminum and glass, giving the effect of a car. The designer of the building was very smart in the sense almost branding the building of Mercedes Benz without being literal with its logo. In doing this, it gave the effect of the Benz's qualities such as a sleek metal design and windows to imitate a car.

The Sony Center in Berlin caught my eye because of not only its glass dome, but because it suprised me that there are large buildings underneath, hidden from the elements. I enjoy the effect that it has at night when the dome is lit up with colors, particularly purple. It is as though this is another world in itself.

I got to visit Barcelona this summer and was able to see the Sagrada Familia. Being one of Gaudi's unique designs, it is captivating to the eye. At first, i was a little confused because it is a larch cluster of sculptures and stories carved into each outdoor wall. I remember there are several different columns all made of different fruit. There is so much going on with this cathedral, that it is not even finished being built. There is still much construction going on. I found it extremely fascinating as to Gaudi's techniques to creating an arch by using bags of sand to balance the weight of the building. What also struck me was the organic features that came through the design and what aspects of nature gave him inspiration.

This building is in Toronto and is interesting to me because it is such a plain building in its design, but with this artistic addition, it makes the piece a work of art and makes it so that the building go unnoticed.

Crazy Looking Soviet Buildings

Because people of the Soviet Union did not get married in churches as Russians do not get married in in churches, they have buildings that are called "Place of Marriage" instead. Personally, would consider this a church anyway. It pretty much looks like one because it has a large tower representing a steeple and what appears to be a large area for a congregation. I find this to be a beautiful building with its curvy shapes and it different style of windows. The flushed color makes it seem pure and cleansed.

When i first saw this building i just wanted to rent one of the compartments. It looks like a mountain of dusty dirt and gives a natural feel, but has a strong modern appeal because of how natural the structure is put together in its boxlike structures. The environment around it appears to be flat and with a lot of lushes greenery, but this building contradicts it environment around it and has a dry, mountainous feel too it.

This piece stood out to me because it almost looks robotic from a movie with technology attacking everyone and bringing the world to a scary ending. It is called the “State Department for Traffic” which is probably why it looks so official. The idea behind this building is interesting but i would not like to see this in any city i live in because it is too bland, although it does have a lot of different structural techniques such as using the number two as a basis on the number of window and sets of rectangular shapes compiled together vertically and horizontally.

Now this building looks like it is about to stand up and open its eyes with two big headlights. This is probably why it is called "A Big Monster." To me it looks like the big marshmallow man that grew to be huge and attacked the city in Ghostbusters. It even has two eyes and a mouth with two eyes up top.

Seattle Experience Music Project

I visited this building a few years ago in Seattle, Washington and it has never left my mind. It is the most memorable museum I have ever been to. The Seattle Experience Music Project is a wacky looking building that represents a guitar. You can sort of tell from its architectural features that look like guitar strings. At first, i didn't really understand what was up with this building, but now i have a new appreciation for it because i am studying design and coming up with ways to portray an idea without being too literal. The colors pop wonderfully and its great how every section of the building has its own defined features.

Hannah Green's Pencil Project
Hannah Coble's memory box

This is the redo that is the closest to Hannah Coble's memory box. It is a cube like structure and has a lot of decorative shapes around the sides of the box.

This box is right in the middle between the two Hannah's projects. The box is not as tall as Green's, but not as short as Coble's. it has a divider in the center of the box and a print on the lid like Coble's does; it also has decoraions around the sides to represent Green's Memory box.

This box comes closest to represent Hannah Coble's Pencil Box. It has a divider in the center of the box and is a rectangular shape. and of coarse there is a lot of colorful shapes on the lid to represent Hannah Greens Memory box.

This Layout is from the magazine The English Home - August 2006

I really like this one because of how the colors tie together and how there is one main pictures of an image, but it also has sub pictures which gives more detail to the design. I also like how it has the minimum amount of words including one larger caption and a couple lesser important sentences.

Container for a Memory

Assignment- to create a container to hold a memory.

My memory was from when i was little and my family would always go to the Carolina Inn to eat. My Aupair from Norway would always give me glasses full of half and half instead of milk, so i had a heavy addiction to this heavenly cream. One of he many family visits to the Carolina Inn I stepped up onto a stool to grab a handful of coffee samples of half and half. My mom saw me and told me that I was only allowed to have two this time instead of the five small cartons that I had. I was really upset, and for some reason this memory has always stuck with me.

I really admire Andrea Joseph's work. She can take simple objects and draw them so that they have character. Her site is very simple and quaint, which i like a lot and hope to portray in my own blog.
